When To Seek Treatment For Depression
No matter who you are or where you are from, no doubt at some point in your life you have experienced some form of depression. From losing a family member to postpartum depression, this condition is a growing epidemic among every country in the world. Although depression has various stages and areas, any form of depression should be treated in the right way. But, how do you know when to seek help from your doctor or not? Well, here are a few symptoms of depression that you need to consult your doctor about:
Sudden weight gain or loss: A major change in your weight is something that you need to discuss with your doctor. No matter if you are eating too much or have no appetite, a drastic change in weight can be a sign of a chemical imbalance or another problem that needs a doctor's attention.
Withdrawal from social activities: If you are finding that you no long take pleasure in the social activities that you used to, this is a sign to see your doctor as well. One of the main symptoms of depression is withdrawal from social activities and can lead to more serious symptoms if not treated. From an evening out with friends to shopping at the store, normal social activities that you once enjoyed can be enjoyed again with treatment.
Extreme fatigue: For some, a main symptom of depression is fatigue. It can range from mild to extreme, where the patient will sleep for up to 20 hours a day. Any change in your energy or normal fatigue levels (everyone gets a little tired sometimes), is a sign to see your doctor immediately as well. Fatigue can sneak into your life and start to pull you away from friends, family, and work, and if not treated can lead to other symptoms of depression.
Thoughts of suicide or hurting people (including yourself): These are major symptoms that need to be treated immediately. These thoughts can turn into other serious symptoms and can cause major problems in your life and with family and friends who want to help you. So if you are experiencing any of these thoughts, you need to contact your doctor immediately.
Uncontrolled worrying: Some who suffer from depression suffer from uncontrolled worrying. This worrying can be about themselves, family members, friends, or world events beyond their control. Usually, this symptom can be treated easily, but if left untreated, this can turn into an anxiety disorder or other complication.
These are just a few of the main symptoms of depression that need to be treated. You can discuss any other symptoms or concerns that you have with your doctor when you go in for an office visit. Most doctors can easily treat depression with a prescription or over the counter medications. So, no matter which symptom you are suffering from, you need to see your doctor to begin treating these symptoms before your depression turns into a larger condition
